Basic Brewing Equipment
Intro
Mead is an ancient alcoholic beverage that has been enjoyed for centuries. Today, people are rediscovering this drink and are eager to make their own at home. If you're interested in making mead, you'll need to gather a few basic pieces of hardware. In this post, I will outline the essential mead hardware requirements.
Hardware:
Note: If you click any of my links to these Amazon products, I do get commission on the purchase. So thank you for helping out a small time blogger, creator, and fellow mead enthusiast!
Mead Kit - This is a great starting point because it gives you all the basic equipment and even a packet of yeast to get started. Just add honey!
Large Mouth Carboy - This is optional but its handy to have a second carboy to rack your mead into when the time comes.
Star San - If you are going to make more mead you need a good quality sanitizer. Trust me, get some Star San.
Hydrometer - This tool helps measure alcohol content and lets you know when the mead is dry or done fermenting. It isnβt necessary if you are just getting started but again it is really handy to have on hand.
Airlock and Stoppers - 1 gallon carboys and drilled lids - Once you get going on your mead hobby, I recommend picking up a few spare airlocks. They are inexpensive and a necessity for a high quality product.
Siphon - This is a must have for transfer mead from vessel to vessel. If you can afford it grab a spare!
Bottles - You need to store your mead somewhere, right? These bottles have screw on lids, which is great because you can reuse them. That feature cuts future costs by so much!
Pitcher - A pitcher with measuring lines takes all the guess work out of how many bottles you need. Its definitely not a needed item but I find it handy.
With these tools in hand, you're ready to start making your own delicious mead. Cheers!
